Designs for new Korean town revealed
Designs for the first mixed-use scheme in a new town south of the Korean capital, Seoul, have been revealed by Dutch architects MVRDV.
The Gwanggyo Power Centre, one of two envisioned developments in the town led by developers Daewoo Consortium and the municipality of Gwanggyo, consists of hill-shaped buildings and will feature 200,000sq m of leisure space including a three-storey spa, a seven-storey multiplex and a building dedicated to entertainment as well as retail units. The development, designed in collaboration with local architect DA Group and British engineers Arup, will also feature 200,000sq m of residential units, 48,000sq m of office space, and education facilities.
Each floor of the buildings will feature terraces with box hedges to simulate a park-like environment and to complement the developments natural surroundings. There will also be large atriums in the middle of the buildings serving as lobbies for the housing units and offices, plazas for the shopping centre and halls for a museum. The town will be large enough to inhabit 77,000 people. The plans and feasibility study are currently being developed at the Gyeonggi provincial authority’s Urban Innovation Corporation. The project is expected to be completed by 2011.
