K-Thengono's rooftop garden adds greenery to the Jakarta skyline

The vision of the project is to introduce a role model that gives a new opportunity for any existing buildings in Jakarta to develop an elevated rooftop garden that brings the natural elements back to the city.
– Kelvin Thengono

Emerging studio K-Thengono Design has designed a rooftop garden for an existing hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, that is aimed at both providing space for guests to relax and introducing new greenery to the city to help clean its polluted air.

As well as providing covered seating, a bar and views across the city, the 2,700sq ft (250sq m) space, called Noru, was designed in part as an antidote to the lack of green space being developed elsewhere in the growing city.

Explaining this, Kelvin Thengono, founder and principal at K-Thengono, said: "The result is poor air quality, which brings an unhealthy lifestyle to the citizens. The vision of the project is to introduce a role model that gives a new opportunity for any existing buildings in Jakarta to develop an elevated rooftop garden that brings the natural elements back to the city."

The garden's greenery will be made up of plants and trees, while other natural elements used in the design include stone and Bengkirai – a local hardwood from Indonesia. Elsewhere, the frames and supports for the decking and pergola-type structures will be made of steel.

Work on Noru began this summer and is expected to be completed in early 2020.
