Australian theme park Dreamworld to open indigenous walk-through experience in December

Australian Gold Coast theme park Dreamworld is set to introduce a new themed experience in December, with the Dreamworld Corroboree providing visitors with an interactive walk-through celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, wildlife and stories.

The project began in July last year when the park won a funding grant from the Australian Government to work with community locals to build an indigenous tourism experience.

The federally funded attraction will allow visitors to interact with wildlife, including koalas, kangaroos and cassowaries, while being able to get a glimpse of the attraction's largest reptile, the saltwater crocodile.

As well as animals, the walk-through will also allow people to integrate themselves into indigenous culture by taking part in dot painting, fire-making, live didgeridoo playing, animal talks and demonstrations on spear throwing.

There will also be an interactive presentation, featuring a live performance mixed with a short-film, providing a history of the local Yugambeh people's story.

To ensure the experience is as realistic as possible, Dreamworld has sought the services of indigenous cultural consultant and entertainer David Dahwurr Hudson, who will deliver the entertainment and interactive component of the new attraction.

"Woven into the experiences will be a cross-section of culture and legendary stories including Mabo, Dreamtime, men and women's business, the Tasmanian Devil, the Kimberleys and even the Far North,” Hudson said of the project.
