London Bridge station roof moving to Aberystwyth railway museum

Part of the 177-year-old London Bridge station roof is set to be rebuilt in Aberystwyth, Wales as part of a proposed £10m (US$15.2m, €11.7m) narrow gauge railway museum.

Opened in 1902, the Vale of Rheidol Railway, which attracts around 40,000 visitors annually, has been given sections of London Bridge station's roof, which it plans to use to house its new locomotive museum.

Elements have been saved from the roof including 16 columns and 14 beams in a deal that sees about a third of London Bridge's old barrel arch move to its new home in Wales.

The Vale of Rheidol intends to submit plans for the 100,000sq ft (9,300sq m) museum to Ceredigion council and to apply for grants to fund the multi-million pound project.

Recent developments on the line have seen the construction of a large restoration and conservation workshop costing more than £1m (US$1.52m, €1.17m). Alongside this work the railway has been rebuilding intermediate stations buildings on the line, all of which had been demolished by British Railways.
