Work starts on £35m Aston Cross scheme

Ethnic food producer East End Foods has commenced work on the first phase of a £35m mixed-use development at the former HP Sauce factory site in Aston Cross, Birmingham.
A 100,000sq ft (9,290sq m) wholesale cash and carry and distribution centre will comprise Stage One of the scheme, which will cost £9m and will create 95 jobs. The first phase also boasts a 30,000sq ft (2,787sq m) Urban Farm and Technology Centre, while the second phase - to start in 2012 - will feature a hotel and conference centre.
MADE Architecture is behind the designs for the Aston Cross development, which is to be delivered by John Sisk and Son. Kartar Consulting is the cost management company. East End Foods chair Tony Deep Wouhra said: "The site is a prominent gateway to Birmingham and one with an important legacy for the city and the food industry.
"We are proud to be continuing this association with a development that will secure its future as a vibrant commercial centre for food innovation and enterprise."
