Rotherham United unveils new stadium designs
Rotherham United Football Club (RUFC) has unveiled its final plans for a new 12,000-seat stadium on the town's former Guest and Chrimes foundry site.
Designed by S&P Architects, the stadium scheme will be project managed by Gleeds and is to be delivered by GMI Construction. Under the plans for the stadium, the west stand will accommodate exhibition and banqueting facilities for a combined total of 600 guests, as well as offices, a newsroom and security.
The north and south stands will have a polycarbonate edge to the roof in order to allow light onto the pitch, while the east stand will have a polycarbonate roof system. Work is due to begin on site in May/June, with construction to commence in July. It is hoped the stadium will be completed in time for the 2012-13 season.
RUFC chair Tony Stewart said: "This stadium will be an iconic figure right at the centre of Rotherham and its facilities and unique design will stand up against any stadium in the country. "The stadium will not only benefit this football club but will provide the centre piece of significant regeneration in Rotherham."
Jarrod Best, managing director of GMI Construction, added: "The designers, S&P Architects, have had a desire from the outset to create a scheme of major benefit for local people and to deliver the most fan-friendly stadium."
