URBN to open eco-friendly hotel in China
URBN Hotels & Resorts has announced plans to open a boutique hotel which will marketed as 'China greenest'.
The 20,000sq m boutique hotel is scheduled to open in 2012 and will be part of a larger 200,000sq m mixed-use development in the Sanlin district of Pudong in Shanghai, China.
The RMB312m (£30m, US$47m, EUR35m) hotel will include 55 hotel rooms, 50 serviced residences and 4,500sq m of leisure space - including wellness, fitness, dining and art.
URBN is working with Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki and Vanke, the largest residential real estate developer in China, on the project.
Jules Kwan, Managing Director of URBN Hotels & Resorts, said: "The aim is to make this hotel go beyond sustainability ... it will be the first positive-impact hotel in China.
"There are several ideas being developed which will be revealed over the course of the 18-month construction period. The hotel will increase the biodiversity of the site, and will discharge water that is cleaner than the water from the city's water supply."
