£30m Redcar seafront plans revealed

Plans for a major £30m transformation of Redcar seafront - including a new 80ft (24.4m) vertical pier - have been put on show by the local authority.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council (RCBC) is inviting residents, businesses and visitors to comment on the project, which is designed to regenerate the area and attract inward investment. Proposals also include the creation of upgraded flood defences and the development of The Hub, which will provide creative industries with a local, "showpiece" base.
It is hoped that a planning application will be submitted this summer with a view to starting construction work in the autumn. Funding will be provided by the Environment Agency and the council. Regional development agency One North East, European Regional Development Fund and the Enterprise Team is also supporting the scheme.
Sheelagh Clarke, cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism at RCBC, said: "This project is certainly one of the most important the borough has seen for many years. It gives us a fantastic opportunity to enhance the famous Redcar seafront, bringing huge benefits to local people, businesses and visitors."
