BCFC stadium project handed planning boost

Bristol City Football Club's (BCFC) plans for a new 30,000-seat stadium at Ashton Vale were given a boost after councillors approved proposals for a new access road to the venue.
North Somerset Council's planning and regulatory committee unanimously voted in favour of the access plans, which were initially rejected by the local authority in December last year. The government has already said that it will not intervene in a decision to approve plans for the Populous-designed stadium itself, which is due to be completed in time for the 2012-13 season.
A separate planning application, which has been submitted by Sainsbury's for the development of a supermarket on the site of BCFC's current Ashton Gate stadium, is set to be considered in July. BCFC business development director Guy Price said: "This is the last piece of the jigsaw in the planning process for the new stadium. We have worked hard to ensure that all the issues have been addressed. We will continue to liaise and work with the local community."
