Bombed Mumbai hotel re-opens

The Heritage Wing of Mumbai's Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel, which was damaged in a terrorist attack in November 2008, is to re-open on 1 July.

The structure has undergone a complete restoration and refurbishment programme and the hotel - owned by Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces - has been renamed The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai. Refurbishment work has taken place on the hotel's bars, restaurants and banqueting spaces, with renovation of the rooms and suites - including 19 individually themed luxury suites - being the final phase of the process.

All of the suites will be open to guests from the beginning of July, with the exception of the Presidential Tata, the Ravi Shankar and the Bell Tower Suites, which are scheduled to open on 1 September. The re-launch was a collaboration by a number of architecture and design firms, including Lissoni Associati Milano, which renovated the Elephanta, Dutch and Lotus suites; San Francisco-based BMO, responsible for the Bell Tower, Coral Connoisseur and Neptune suites, as well as the Taj Club Rooms; and LTW Design Works, which was commissioned to renovate the Dolphin, Bella Vista, Maratha and Aquarius suites.

Singapore-based James Park Associates led the work on the Rajput, the Seagull Penthouse, the Gateway of India, the Ravi Shankar and the Presidential Tata suites, in addition to the Luxury Grande Rooms. All of the suites offer views of the India Gate and the Bay of Bombay, with the Aquarius and Coral Connoisseur suites additionally featuring spacious verandas.

Once the renovation scheme is finished, the Taj Mahal Palace and Taj Mahal Tower will together provide 285 rooms. This includes the 19 luxury suites, 23 executive suites, 82 Taj Club rooms and 161 Grande Luxury rooms.
