London 2012 water polo arena named

London-based David Morley Architects (DMA) has been appointed by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to draw up designs for a new water polo arena, which will be used at the 2012 Games.

The temporary venue, which will provide seating capacity for 5,000 spectators and a warm-up pool, will be located alongside the permanent Aquatics Centre and will act as a gateway to the Olympic Park site. Construction work is scheduled to get underway in spring 2011 and is expected to take around a year to complete in order for test events to be held at the arena in the lead up to the Games.

Following the conclusion of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the venue will be removed and the riverside site - to the north of the Aquatics Centre - will be redeveloped by the Olympic Park Legacy Company. ODA chief executive David Higgins said: "This appointment reflects our commitment to a sustainable legacy, building permanent venues only where there is a clear long term use, and to quality design across the Olympic Park."

DMA's David Morley added: "The water polo venue holds a key position at the entrance to the Olympic Park and will complement the Aquatics Centre and Olympic Stadium. The design will be driven by a creative approach to achieving cost effectiveness."
