Greenwich Market set for revamp

Plans for the 100,000sq ft mixed-use regeneration of Greenwich Market in London, part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, have been submitted to the London Borough of Greenwich.
Designed by Hopkins Architects, the scheme is part of the redevelopment of Greenwich Town Centre. Among plans for the 0.7-hectare (1.7-acre) site are a 100-bed boutique hotel, shops and studios under a newly covered market square. The site is owned by Greenwich Hospital and is surrounded by Grade II-listed properties. The market has been on this site since 1830. Planners Drivers Jonas are handling the development on behalf of the hospital.
Martin Sands, director of Greenwich Hospital, said: "Following an extensive stakeholder and community consultation we have been able to submit our plans to Greenwich Council for the regeneration of Greenwich Market. "I believe the plans will complement Greenwich's position as a tourist and retail destination, will promote retail diversity and maintain the character of the market. The quality of architecture will enhance Greenwich's status as a World Heritage Site and Maritime Heritage Site."
Construction on the project is due to begin in 2010, with the view to be completed by 2012.
