Tottenham Hotspur unveils new stadium plans

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (THFC) has announced plans to move to a new 60,000-seat stadium in north London.

The club has outlined the proposals as part of its Northumberland Development Project, which will also incorporate new facilities including a museum and a new base for the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. Plans for the new stadium cover an area around 20 acres (8.1 hectares), and include the site of the current 36,000-seat White Hart Lane stadium, which opened in 1899, as well as an adjacent industrial area.

A public exhibition will be held to present the plans to the local community during November, and a planning application is expected to be submitted to Haringey Council after a second public exhibition at a later date. Daniel Levy, chair of THFC, said: "The Northumberland Development Project will deliver a world-class scheme and substantial new investment for Haringey and our supporters. It represents a significant step in the growth of the club, with a proposed stadium capacity of 60,000.

"We believe that this scheme has the potential to create a truly inspirational environment for the club and community, as well as acting as the catalyst for the uplift of the wider area." Leader of Haringey Council George Meehan, expressed his support for the scheme. He said: "We have been working extremely hard to regenerate the Tottenham area, which suffered so much from industrial decline. Real progress is being made, and it is extremely pleasing that Spurs has demonstrated that it shares our commitment to this continuing regeneration."

THFC's announcement was made on the same day that it revealed its financial results for year ending June 2008, which saw turnover increase by 11 per cent to £114.8m.
