Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios set to reimagine Liverpool’s waterfront

by Andrew Manns | 30 May 2019
This is a great commission for a site at the physical, historical, and emotional heart of Liverpool.
– Geoff Rich

British architecture firm Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS) have won a competition to draft a master plan for Liverpool's historic waterfront district.

Situated in the city's UNESCO-recognised maritime quarter, the rehabilitated development will – according to the architects – "maximise the use of the 18th-century dockland to create an outstanding visitor destination."

Set to unfold over a 10-year-period, FCBS's plan will also see the area's disused listed buildings restored to their former glory.

The architects' design team, which includes Planit IE, Fourth Street, Standard Practice, Arup, and museum consultant Andrea Nixon, beat out 25 other competitors for the job, including Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG).

Speaking on the scheme, Geoff Rich, managing partner at FCBStudios, said: "We are looking forward to creating a strong and connected vision for the waterfront site as a whole to make the most of the historic location, public spaces, and the National Museums Liverpool's buildings, for a range of sustainable and engaging activities."

"Liverpool’s waterfront is not only a beautiful space but also one of huge historic significance to the city," commented Mairi Johnson, director of estates for National Museums Liverpool.

"This is an exciting opportunity to create spaces and really engage with the spirit of the place."
