SC Freiburg gets green light for new €108m stadium

German Bundesliga club SC Freiburg has received green light for a new 35,000-capacity stadium.

A public vote saw 58.2 per cent of local residents approve of the plans, meaning that the club can proceed with its plans to build the €108m (£81m, US$124m) stadium in the Wolfswinkel district of the city of Freiburg.

The club has been looking to move to a bigger venue for a while, as it regularly sells out its current, 24,000-seat Mage Solar Stadium.

Mage Solar is the Bundesliga’s second smallest home ground – with only Paderborn’s Benteler Arena boasting less capacity – and also has to have special dispensation as its pitch is five metres too short for European football.

"I just want to say thanks," said SC Freiburg's president Fritz Keller, commenting on the public vote.

"I can promise you that we are going to be good neighbours in our new surroundings, as we’ve been over decades at the Mage Solar."

The stadium itself will cost around €70m to build, but related infrastructure developments will cost an estimated €38m - pushing the total expense to €108m.

No detailed plans or designs have yet been unveiled for the stadium.

The project will be funded in part by the public, with the city of Freiburg paying for all infrastructure costs.

SC Freiburg is hoping to have the stadium ready for the 2018-19 Bundesliga season.
