Soccer City Stadium nets architecture prize
The venue for the 2010 football World Cup final - Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa - has been named as the World's Best Sport Building.
Designed by Populous and Boogertman + Partners, the 94,000-seat venue received the accolade at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards 2010 in Barcelona, Spain. WAF Awards judges said of Soccer City Stadium: "It is a genuine example of a building forming deep and lasting roots in its culture and giving a new exciting future to an otherwise rundown area, becoming instantly recognisable as the face of the South African World Cup."
Meanwhile, the World's Best Culture Building accolade was awarded to MAXXI, National Museum of XXI Arts in Rome, Italy, which was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. MAXXI held off 13 other shortlisted entries to receive the prize. Image: Soccer City Stadium - Leon Krige
