Iconic Gateshead pub set for revamp

One of Gateshead's most iconic pubs is set to undergo a major revamp after the local authority agreed to help fund the restoration of the Grade II-listed property.

The Central, which is situated in the town's Bridges Conservation Area, has been acquired by The Head of Steam pub chain and is now set to be fully revitalised by its new owners. Gateshead Council has contributed more than £142,000 from its Town Heritage Initiative, while the council has also secured nearly £270,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Plans for the property include the renovation of the main bar room and bar servery to reveal the property's original Victorian ceiling, the creation of a roof garden and the restoration of original window features. The council has appointed West Auckland-based John Niven Architects to oversee the scheme, which will be undertaken by local contractors Tony Smith (Construction).

Tony Brookes from The Head of Steam chain said: "Our company has been in business for almost thirty years and has a distinguished history of taking over failed businesses and turning them around to make successful and popular businesses. "Our aim is that any changes to the building fabric will be of the highest design quality, worthy of national accreditation. We will also be very proud to develop the business to make it a major Gateshead attraction."

Gateshead Council leader Mick Henry added: "The Central is one of the largest and most striking buildings in Gateshead's historic core, yet its condition has been a cause of serious concern. "Now at last we have the chance of helping this unique building to become one of the highlights of Gateshead's revitalised Town Centre, aided by a successful local company with a track record of innovative and sensitive restoration."
