Mumbles Pier plans to move forward
Swansea Council has announced that plans for the restoration of Mumbles Pier in South Wales are to move forward, after it was recommended that a development framework for the area be adopted.
An extensive public consultation has been held to gather the opinions of local residents on the proposed £39m mixed-use scheme, which is designed to transform the historic site into a visitor and tourist attraction. Proposals for the pier include a new café, a restaurant, a conference and function centre, a hotel, a residential development and improved public spaces, as well as a new promenade.
If the council approves the plans, it is hoped that it will provide the pier's owners - AMECO - with supplementary planning guidance to develop detailed proposals for the site. Chris Holley, Swansea Council leader, said: "Mumbles Pier and Mumbles Head are among the best-known landmarks in the city and are instantly recognised by any visitor who's ever been here. That's why the development framework is so important.
"The framework has given the people of Swansea a say in how this area of our city will look for years to come while at the same time making it possible to breathe new life with an exciting and sustainable re-development."
