Cardiff pool opens after revamp
The Peter Perkin's Swimming Pool at the Fitzalan High School has opened following a £300,000 revamp.
Work on the pool facility, which is open to both pupils and the general public, included the refurbishment of the 20m pool and the transformation of a disused classroom into a fitness suite and multi-gym facility.
The new fitness suite has been fitted with a selection of CV stations – including treadmills, cross trainers and exercise bikes – and a free weights area.
The project was undertaken as a joint venture between the Sports Council for Wales, Cardiff Council’s Active Communities team and Fitzalan High School.
Cath Bradshaw, head teacher at Fitzalan High School, said: "The opening of the new swimming pool will not only provide a valuable resource for pupils, but the local community too.
"The new facility will also support the 5x60 programme within the school and will allow for an increased range of activities to be run such as Kayaking and water polo."
5x60 is the Welsh Assembly Government programme – managed by the Sports Council for Wales and run locally by Cardiff County Council – which aims to get secondary school children not engaged in sport and physical recreation more active, more often.
